There are many reasons that a person may require root canal therapy. These include painful cavities that have reached the nerve of the tooth, trauma or fracture, or extensive previous dental work that results in chronic nerve irritation. Root canal therapy is a great solution for all these problems and enables you to keep your natural tooth. The process is straightforward and is comfortable with just local anesthetic. The nerve of the tooth is accessed by making a small opening in the top of the tooth much like you would during a filling. We then use specialized instruments to remove the nerve tissue and disinfect the inside of the tooth. A filling is placed in the roots of the tooth to act as a sealer. The end result of root canal therapy is a clean and sealed tooth that promotes healing and gets you out of discomfort all while avoiding tooth extraction. Dr. Stevens performs root canals on almost all teeth that have not had a previous root canal. He does so right here in the office that you are familiar and comfortable with so you don’t have to make a separate trip to another office!
